A2A expands its renewable energy portfolio to ensure price stability for families and businesses
ERG secures long-term revenue of its latest repowering wind farm project
Milan, August 1, 2025 – A2A and ERG, through its subsidiary ERG Power Generation S.p.A., have signed a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), starting from January 1, 2027, for the supply of about 2.7 TWh of renewable energy from wind power during the period.
“The agreement signed today with ERG, which entrusts us with part of its renewable capacity, confirms our role as a platform for Energy Management capable of aggregating the green energy produced by our plants together with that of other operators, and of offering flexible solutions to meet the consumption needs of different types of customers,” said Renato Mazzoncini, CEO of A2A. “For our Group, this is the first 15-year PPA with a leading operator like ERG: a long-term horizon that gives us greater stability and price visibility in the medium to long term. We will continue to guarantee energy that is affordable, reliable for our customers’ needs, and sustainable because it is renewable, while also contributing to the energy security and balance of the country, businesses, and citizens.”
Paolo Merli, CEO of ERG, said: “We are very proud of this agreement that one the one side allows us to maximize the value of our latest wind repowering project started up in Italy through energy sales mechanisms able to stabilize revenues and, on the other side, allows us to contribute event though indirectly to stabilise prices for families and businesses. Thanks to this contract signed today with A2A, a leading Italian multi-utility company strongly committed to decarbonization like we are, the Group’s contracted energy through long term agreements signed with private counterparts will reach more than 3.5 TWh per year confirming the consistency of our route-to-market strategy.”
The agreement provides for A2A to purchase clean energy produced by ERG’s Salemi-Castelvetrano wind farm in the province of Trapani, the fourth project started as part of the repowering program for its portfolio plants. This intervention, pioneered by ERG, involves a full technological renewal of the assets that doubles installed capacity and triples production, while halving the number of turbines. After replacing all existing wind turbines with new, more efficient machines, the plant now has 18 Vestas turbines of 4.2 MW each, for a total installed capacity of 75.6 MW, with an estimated annual production of 208 GWh.
The green energy produced by the wind farm can cover the electricity needs of about 41,000 families, avoiding about 74,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
With this PPA, A2A, the second largest operator in Italy by installed capacity and electricity distributed, has chosen to diversify and optimize the mix of renewable technologies in its portfolio to better meet the different consumption needs of its customers. This agreement strengthens A2A’s role as an enabler of the energy transition by promoting long-term supply models that offer greater protection against price volatility. The agreement aligns with the 2035 Strategic Plan, which allocates 22 billion euros to the development of projects that support the
country’s ecological transition, increase renewable energy availability, and reduce dependence on foreign sources.
