Ninety-one percent of the world population lives in areas where the air quality fails to meet the standards set out by the World Health Organization (WHO). From an economical, health and social point of view, the impacts of air pollution are considerable: in 2021, there was a marked increase in CO2 emissions. This is why, in our 2021-2030 Business Plan, we have foreseen substantial measures designed to make the air in the towns and cities where we live cleaner.
We have thus begun testing a new product, BIOVITAE® STREET™, developed by the Nextsense start-up. It is an outdoor lighting system able to counter air pollution thanks to a photocatalysis reaction that uses the combination of rutile titanium dioxide (rutile TiO₂) with BIOVITAE frequencies, the only ones capable of triggering the photo-activation of rutile TiO₂. This is a technology that contributes to the well-being of the environment and of the Planet; since it does not emit any UV radiation, it carries no risks for people.
In our project, we have installed 10 BIOVITAE® STREET™ devices on street lighting poles along Viale del Decumano, which runs through the Milan Innovation District.
The aim of the trial is to assess the anti-pollution performance by using mobile monitoring sensors that measure the air quality in the area where the devices have been installed. The data gathered will be analysed in order to make improvements in the technology and assess further development of the experiment.
