Why an Action Plan

Protecting biodiversity and nature more broadly requires a structured approach

The methodological approach must be capable of integrating strategy, operations and engagement with local areas. For this reason, at A2A we have defined a Biodiversity and Nature Action Plan to progressively and systematically integrate nature-related topics into our business decisions.

The Plan is based on the awareness that the Group’s activities can interact with ecosystems and natural resources in a bidirectional way, and that the conscious management of these interactions is essential to strengthen the resilience of the business model and contribute to the protection of natural capital.

Objectives of the Plan

The Action Plan aims to support our transition towards an increasingly integrated and systemic approach to biodiversity

This strengthens our ability to prevent and manage potential impacts and to enhance nature-related opportunities.

In particular, the Plan aims to:

  • integrate biodiversity-related criteria into strategic and decision-making processes
  • strengthen knowledge of the interactions between the Group’s activities, ecosystems and ecosystem services
  • support the definition of mitigation, restoration and enhancement actions for biodiversity
  • foster alignment with relevant international standards and frameworks, as well as with market, investor and stakeholder expectations

Definition of the Plan

The Action Plan has been defined through a structured process involving several corporate functions and is based on the analysis of national and international best practices

The work included:

  • a benchmarking activity to compare A2A’s approach with that of peers and industry leaders
  • the mapping of Business Units and key activities, to assess impacts and dependencies on natural resources
  • the analysis of the main gaps with respect to reference frameworks
  • engagement and sharing sessions with corporate functions and local stakeholders

This process made it possible to identify priority areas for action and to define a pathway consistent with the Group’s overall strategy.

Areas of intervention of the Plan

The Action Plan is structured around key pillars that reflect the complexity of the relationship between industrial activities and nature

Governance and strategic integration

Strengthening processes, roles and responsibilities to integrate biodiversity into corporate strategy and management systems, making it an integral part of long-term decision-making.

Asset and territorial mapping

Expanding and deepening knowledge of assets and territories by integrating ecological and environmental variables and identifying priority activities on which to focus actions.

Impact management and ecosystem enhancement

Supporting the identification and implementation of mitigation, restoration and regeneration measures, in line with local context characteristics and the mitigation hierarchy.

Training activities and community engagement

Promoting dialogue with stakeholders and strengthening internal and external awareness of the value of biodiversity through training, information and awareness-raising initiatives.

An evolving Plan

The Biodiversity and Nature Action Plan is conceived as a dynamic tool, designed to evolve over time

The actions already initiated represent a foundation on which to build an increasingly structured commitment, capable of adapting to regulatory, environmental and contextual changes.

Through the monitoring of results and continuous engagement with local areas and stakeholders, we aim to progressively strengthen our contribution to biodiversity protection and ecosystem resilience, in line with our sustainability strategy.
