Our welfare

72 million euros a year to improve the quality of life of our workforce and of their families

Attention to well-being, work-life balance, development of a culture based on 360° well-being and income support are the principles guiding a comprehensive welfare system which takes into account the various dimensions which come together to ensure a person's well-being: family, savings, health and free time.

Our response to demographic and social changes

The effects of demographic and social changes require measures to respond to people's new needs: in this context, at A2A, we complement and integrate public welfare through services that can help create a positive impact in the creation of value for the areas that we serve and the communities there.

  • A2A Life Caring: the programme of 10 million euros a year (120 million euros in the course of the 2024-2035 Business Plan) to support parenthood with economic assistance and training schemes, including an annual contribution of up to 3,250 euros for the first three years of a child's life and support for expenses for the care and education of children up to the age of 18.
  • A2A Life Sharing: the Employee Share Ownership Plan worth more than 5.3 million euros a year through which staff can participate in the growth of the company.
  • Productivity bonuses: the 39 million euros/year plan by which employees can choose to assign part or all of their performance bonus to supplementary welfare funds and/or obtain a welfare credit, using an additional company contribution on the amount converted (of about 15%).
  • Other welfare services: 18 million euros a year for other services including the “Homes for workers” project, supplementary healthcare, psychological assistance, well-being initiatives and addiction help, as well as access to dedicated reduced-rate and discount schemes.

Today, the Group is the first company operating also in the sphere of the circular economy to have initiated an Employee Share Ownership Plan, worth 5.3 million euros, for its workforce. This plan bears witness to the sense of responsibility we feel for them.

Family: A2A Life Caring

At A2A, we take care not only of our workforce but also of their families, who can benefit from services aimed at supporting parenthood

In the first months of 2024, the Group signed an important agreement called A2A Life Caring. The scheme provides different forms of assistance to support the parents in the Group:

  • We offer economic help in support of education and family dispute resolution: in particular, we reimburse expenses for school and other education services (where tax relief is foreseen), variable according to age, for the children of employees up to the age of 18 (e.g. textbooks, school fees, nursery school, babysitters, summer camps). For example, annual refund of €3,250 in the 0-3 age bracket.

  • The agreement with trade unions harmonizes conditions for mothers and extends them to fathers:

    • an extra month of compulsory maternity leave on full pay covered by the company (with the possibility of opting for payment)
    • a month of leave on full pay for fathers, again covered by the company (with the possibility of opting for payment).
  • We offer dedicated schemes to the Group's management and new parents so as to ensure that the right attention is paid to parenting. We also organize outreach and awareness activities on issues relating to parenting, fertility/infertility, lifestyles.

    Services:

    • Dedicated help for new mothers
    • Webinars for anyone who has to take care of young children and adolescents
    • Parenting sessions on issues related to couple relationships, education and growth

    • Nursery and infant school: We offer educational care for children aged 0 to 6, provided by highly qualified staff. We have also endorsed the “Growing the future” protocol, an agreement between Italy’s Employment and Social Policy Ministry and 10 major Italian companies for the development of the biggest network of company and private nursery schools.
    • Homes for workers: In 2023, the City of Milan issued the “Homes for workers” tender notice for 270 residential units for a period of 12 years. The contract was awarded to the A2A Group, which selected 30 apartments to be assigned to its own employees.
    • Caregivers: A new service for parents and for those who take care of someone who is fragile or not self-sufficient: an outreach service providing consultancy and concrete help for caregivers, combined with a series of webinars specifically about providing care.

Smart working and work-life balance

Making the most of flexible working with personalized smart-working agreements for our workforce.

A2A is a Life Company not only in terms of the services that it offers but also in terms of the importance it attaches to those who work for the company. We believe in flexible working as a means of enhancing the well-being of our staff with smart-working agreements on a monthly and two-monthly basis, varying from 20% to 60% depending on the specific position held. For Italy, half-day smart working is possible while, for work outside Italy, authorization is on a case-by-case basis. We encourage smart-working and office days organized on the basis of the team activities involved. At A2A, smart working works, contributes to our performance and benefits the work-life balance.

Savings: A2A Life Sharing

Our workforce participates in the company’s growth thanks to A2A Life Sharing

A2A Life Sharing is our Employee Share Ownership Plan (ESOP): an incentive mechanism which fosters engagement and a sense of belonging, reinforcing the relationship between economic results and the value created for the A2A workforce. The agreement, reached with the trade unions, makes us the first Italian company also dealing with the circular economy to have launched an ESOP.

  • Previambiente, Pegaso and Fopen are the funds foreseen in the national employment contract and implemented in the A2A Group. During the year, dedicated meetings are organized to increase awareness of Italy’s pension system and the importance of supplementary pension coverage.

  • The scheme makes it possible for employees to convert all or some of their Performance Bonus and use it for their pension fund or for the purchase of goods or services: we add an amount to the sum converted.

  • Through a series of agreements, constantly being updated, we offer our staff products and services at reduced rates (e.g. ATM and Brescia Trasporti public transport, gas and electricity supplies).

Savings and leisure time

We care deeply about the health and well-being of the Group’s workforce, essential conditions for social, economic and personal growth

Health is vital for personal, social and economic growth. It is a fundamental aspect in the quality of our lives and, for this reason, we also promote healthcare through the organisation of initiatives designed to encourage the prevention of illness and the adoption of healthy lifestyles.

Supplementary healthcare

For Energy staff, we have entered into a partnership with a leading health insurance company which offers a comprehensive health coverage. For employees in the Environment sector, there is the FASDA fund, a concrete solution for those seeking healthcare coverage.

Addiction help

A series of meetings specifically about addiction: “Free from alcohol”, “Don’t let your future go up in smoke”, “Easy winnings? Gambling traps”, “Connected but alone; the reality behind your smartphone’s display”.

Well-being

For A2A, psycho-physical well-being is fundamental if we want to be able to calmly face the ups and downs of our lives

We believe in the importance of managing to find time to talk, to listen and to share experiences. For this reason, we provide our workforce with a psychological support service that offers concrete help in dealing with both personal and professional matters.

Psychological well-being and social assistance

Since the 1990s, we have attached importance to services which help ensure psychological well-being and which safeguard the equilibrium between the individual, their needs and their resources: psychological counselling, psychological cafes, social assistance.

Work spaces

A person’s well-being also depends on how they experience the spaces that surround them. This is why the quality of these spaces is fundamental in fostering well-being. At A2A, we are working on innovative projects whose purpose is to enhance people’s well-being in their workplace in terms of sustainability, health (air quality, ergonomics, fitness), sociality and collaboration.
