Mario Gualtiero Francesco Motta

General Information

Mario Gualtiero Francesco Motta was born on 4 February 1970 in Catania.
He is a Tenured Professor of Technical Environmental Physics at the Energy Department of the Polytechnic of Milan and in particular deals with issues related to energy use in buildings and cities, energy efficiency measures, use of renewables and decarbonisation scenarios.

Work experience: main positions held

  • Since 2004 - University Lecturer (since 2023 Tenured Professor) at the Department of Energy, Polytechnic of Milan (DENG). And coordinates the activities of the RELAB - Renewable heating and cooling Lab research group at DENG.
  • From March 2019 to 2024 - Coordinator of the University’s energy commission.
  • Since 2023, he has been the Rector’s Delegate for Energy Transition.
  • From November 2021 to April 2023 - Member of the technical secretariat of the Steering Committee of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) at Palazzo Chigi.
  • From 2015 to 2016 - Co-coordinator of the Working Group on Scenarios - De-carbonisation Working Group established at the Prime Minister’s Office at Palazzo Chigi.

Other academic appointments

  • Since December 2020 - Member of the “Consultative Group to support the joint IEA-Italy Project: Smarter digital power infrastructure to enhance energy efficiency, resilient systems and energy transitions”.
  • Since 2000 - Participant and coordinator of several international working groups at the International Energy Agency (IEA) - Solar Heating and Cooling Programme and Heat Pump Annex.
  • 2010 - Associate Professor at the Polytechnic of Milan.
  • 2004 - Researcher at Polytechnic of Milan: he conducts research on topics related to air conditioning and refrigeration systems, thermally activated refrigeration cycles, district heating and cooling, solar thermal technologies, building physics, decarbonisation energy scenarios and LCA analysis.
  • From 2002 to 2004 - “Marie Curie individual fellowship” at the Fraunhofer “Institute for Solar Energy systems” in Freiburg (D).
     

Education

Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Polytechnic of Milan in 1998.
Master of Science (MSc) in Energy Systems and the Environment from the University of Strathclyde - Glasgow (UK) in 1996.
PhD in Technical Physics from the University of Genoa in 2002.
