Our commitment

Safeguarding ecosystems is part of the transition

The ecological transition is not only about how we generate energy, recover waste or innovate industrial processes. For us at the A2A Group, it also concerns the relationship we build with the territories in which we operate.

  • the quality of ecosystems
  • the health of the species that inhabit them
  • the ability of local communities to recognise and protect the biodiversity around them

Strategy, policy and targets

How we integrate nature protection into the Group’s decisions

Why protecting nature is strategic

Protecting nature is a strategic factor that guides business decisions and contributes to generating long-term value for the Group, the environment and communities. We integrate biodiversity protection into business decisions to make them more robust and forward-looking. We consider not only the business context, but also the characteristics of the territories and natural resources affected, with the aim of making results clearer and more measurable.

Biodiversity Policy

Our Biodiversity Policy guides the Group’s commitment to protecting nature and integrating biodiversity into strategic and operational decisions. Through environmental studies, impact assessments and detailed mapping of assets in relation to areas of high natural value, we assess and manage interactions between our activities and ecosystems.

To prevent and reduce impacts on flora and fauna, we apply a mitigation hierarchy that prioritises low- or zero-impact solutions and plans protection and conservation actions in line with the principles of "No Net Loss and Do No Significant Harm". Specific attention is also given to forests by promoting the sourcing of recycled or certified materials, with the aim of not contributing to global deforestation.

Protecting nature in the Sustainability Plan

The Group’s Sustainability Plan includes specific targets related to biodiversity protection:

100%

Assets monitored for potential interference with biodiversity

4

Initiatives launched or developed for the protection/improvement of biodiversity

Our approach

From strategy to operations

Our approach is based on the understanding that climate change and biodiversity loss are interconnected phenomena, and that companies can play an active role in:

  • reducing pressures on ecosystems
  • enhancing natural capital
  • strengthening environmental and social resilience over the long term

In 2025, the Group developed its Biodiversity and Nature Action Plan with the aim of systematically integrating biodiversity and nature protection into strategic and operational decisions across the entire Group. This is based on an assessment of impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities along the entire value chain.

Protecting nature across the Group’s assets

We take direct action on our plants and assets to:

  • reduce pressures on ecosystems
  • improve the management of natural resources
  • integrate biodiversity protection into design and operational choices

We assess the environmental risks of our activities, identifying mitigation, restoration and regeneration actions consistent with the ecological characteristics of the surrounding environments. This approach supports industrial decision-making, strengthens environmental risk prevention and enhances the role of technological innovation in protecting nature.

Protection projects in the territories where we operate

We operate in the territories where we are present by developing projects for the conservation, protection and enhancement of ecosystems, also in collaboration with local authorities, scientific institutions, associations and communities.

These initiatives aim to:

  • strengthen the ecological functionality of natural environments
  • support protection of species
  • contribute to the environmental and landscape quality of local areas

In this way, our industrial presence becomes an opportunity to generate shared value and foster a positive, long-lasting relationship with the territories.

Activities supporting research, education and awareness

Alongside operational actions, we promote initiatives that support scientific research, education and the dissemination of knowledge on biodiversity.

We support study and monitoring projects, collaborate with universities and research bodies, and develop education and awareness-raising activities for students, stakeholders and citizens.

Strengthening awareness of the value of biodiversity is, for us, an essential condition for building a shared culture of sustainability over time and encouraging more responsible choices at both individual and collective levels.
